2000-02-28: I'm currently searching for a book-keeping package to run on Linux after my previous package
of 10 years on another OS (No - not that one) failed the Y2K changeover test. The major
problem was finding all the available book-keeping/accounting package that would run on Linux.
You may find it better to search for bookkeeping, book-keeping or book keeping, rather than
accounting which tends to turn up a myriad system process accounting packages.
This page is an attempt to save other people from some of difficulties I experienced. Thanks to
Kevin Waterson, Jamie Honan and Michael Lake for their contributions. Some quotes are from
Freshmeat(FM). If you know of others packages, please send
me the URL.
This is the current URL list and the comments are my own. You will have to determine whether
each package meets your individual needs. A good way to do this is to lurk on the support and
developers list for the GPL packages.
2000-11-17: I've have been subscribed to the lists for three projects (GNU Enterprise,
SQL Ledger and Web Accountant) since early 2000 and kept the messages I've received.
These list archives are now available on the
WWW from WOA. As well as viewing
individual messages You can also search either all three or a specific archive.
- a snooty pack of money grabbing bastards who will not give you the time of day unless they think there is a big pay cheque at the end. Refer your favourite bank to them. The sole good thing that I can find about this mob is their adds in a couple of Linux mags. One day they might send me some info on their packages and I'll change this.
BANAL is Not Another Ledger system - for creating an tracking invoices, etc. Missing GL, AR, AP, etc. I had to source 11 different support packages before it would install and then it promptly died each time.
Really a very expanded personal book keeping system, with share trading. Says it is trying to be like Quicken, which I've taken to mean the functionality, rather than a statement of reliability, etc. Could be used as a very basic double entry accounting package, but no billing or stock control without convoluted manual entries. I found that version after version failed to save any information once you shut it down.
2000-06-21; Since I added Gnu Enterprise, a fair bit seems to have changed and if you are seriously interested in this project, you might want to lurk on the developers list. Also http://test.gnue.org seems to have some new stuff.

- "is a project for the development of a free business manangement software suite. Core components of this suite are the Commodities, Bookkeeping, Accountancy and Inventory Management modules" (FM).
SQL-Ledger is a multiuser, double entry, highly customizable accounting system written in Perl, with internationalization support. Data is stored in a SQL server, and data entry and display is through a browser such as Netscape.
2000-11-17: Read/Search the WOA archive of the Web Accountant list from Dec 2000. Unfortunately I deleted the archive (by accident of course) when setting this all up and have had to start collecting again from November 2000.
A mutli-user, browser based accounting package with database backend - at least that is the theory. There is a lot of discussion going on on the list about this and they don't seem to have decided exactly what they are going to do. What is doubly frightening is that no one seems to have any understanding of how modern accounting is performed.
